L1 vs Tunbridge Wells

Havering Ladies put on a good performance to open their League season with a 4-2 victory over Tunbridge Wells 1s. Wells had been relegated from the division above so Havering were expecting a tough game. It did prove to be a well contested match. Havering welcomed back Pippa Wilson, Amelia Acreman and Bukki Olodo and all contributed well to the victory. A penalty corner in the first five minutes put Havering ahead, Emily Martin deflecting in the save from Steph Prowse's strike. Havering soon capitalised on their possession and pressure with Sue Harwood neatly finishing a good move through from midfield. With the defence in commanding form and the midfield working hard despite the heat, Havering continued to dominate and Wells were finding it difficult to establish themselves on the game. A converted penalty corner however, just before half time, allowed them to come back into the match. Havering were undaunted and although the second half was a little more even in terms of possession, Havering had the better opportunities. Martin saw several shots saved as did Harwood and Prowse. When a Wells' defender stopped a shot on the goal line with her foot, Wilson stepped up and calmly put away the ensuing penalty stroke and gave Havering a little breathing space. A superb move involving Emily Gilkes-Tarsey, Martin and Wilson was finished with a reverse stick strike by Katie Griggs. Louise Burgess began to cause problems running from defence and was ably supported by Wilson, Charlotte Chamberlin and Prowse. Nic Earle and Wendy Schofield battled well in defence and keeper Sophie McCoy made some good saves. Martin and Harwood again saw shots saved. A lapse in concentration allowed Wells to pull a goal back with 5 minutes to go but Havering held firm to secure an opening match victory. It was an excellent first match performance.
