Havering 2’s were left wondering what might have been on Saturday as they played out a frustrating 1-1 draw against local rivals Upminster 3’s. Despite dominating large spells of possession and seeing a late penalty flick saved, the visitors had to settle for a point in a game defined by missed opportunities and defensive lapses.

Early Dominance and Frustration

Havering started the contest with intent, dictating the tempo and moving the ball with confidence. Captain Ryan Lee set the tone early, embarking on one of his trademark dazzling runs down the right flank to earn a short corner within the opening minutes. However, the opportunity went begging due to a misfired injection, a sign of the clinical edge that would elude Havering for much of the afternoon.

The visitors continued to knock on the door, and debutant Zorro Narwhal almost enjoyed a dream start to his 2's career. With his very first touch of the game, Narwhal unleashed a venomous strike that beat the keeper, only to be denied by the woodwork. It was a familiar story for the 2’s, who have struggled to convert pressure into goals in recent weeks.

A Defensive Lapse and the Breakthrough

Against the run of play, Upminster found an opening. One of their younger contingent produced a masterful solo run, weaving past Lee and penetrating the ‘D’. A breakdown in communication followed; Jack Harding was unable to clear the danger, and with goalkeeper Paul Afteni inexplicably grounded—looking more prepared for a trip to the beach than a goal-line stand—Upminster fired the ball into the roof of the net to take a 1-0 lead.

Havering refused to let their heads drop. Excellent link-up play between Mitchell Cuttell, Gabe Bushnell-Wye, Ollie Johnson, and Matt Kennedy carved out several openings. Kennedy came agonisingly close to levelling the scores, but in a repeat of last outing's finishing woes, he dragged his shot wide of the post.

The equaliser finally arrived via a well-worked short corner. Michael Caruana-Smith injected with pace to Haydn Joslin, whose powerful drive was parried by the Upminster keeper. Caruana-Smith was the quickest to react, smuggling the rebound over the line to record Havering’s first goal in four matches.

Second-Half Tension

Following a fiery half-time team talk from Steve Ashton and Paul Johnson, Havering emerged for the second period looking to seize all three points. However, the game turned into a tepid affair, with Havering enjoying the lion's share of the ball but failing to break down a resolute Upminster backline.

The drama spiked late in the half following a defensive mix-up. Harding played a ball into elderly Paul Johnson, who, under the impression he had support behind him, allowed the ball to run - only to find an Upminster attacker lurking. As the forward bore down one-on-one, Alastair Lewis tracked back with an unusual burst of pace and collided with the attacker. The umpire pointed to the spot for a penalty flick, though Lewis was perhaps lucky to escape a card, especially given the dubious yellow card shown to Caruana-Smith earlier in the game.

Afteni to the Rescue

The match hinged on the ensuing flick. After a lengthy delay, the Upminster player produced a tame effort. Afteni, keen to atone for his first-half lapse, guessed correctly and produced a heroic save to keep the scores level. While the save earned him the Man of the Match award, one suspects Roy Keane would have been fuming at the suggestion that a keeper should be praised merely for "doing his job."

There was still time for one final heart-in-mouth moment when Bushnell-Wye suffered a momentary lapse in geographical awareness, passing the ball 50 yards backwards directly to an Upminster player. Fortunately for the visitors, the final whistle blew before the mistake could be punished.

While disappointed not to have capitalised on their dominance, Havering will take the positives - and the point - into their final game of the season next week against Waltham Forest 3's.
