Finding momentum

Havering hosted Waltham Forest at Campion hoping to make it three wins on the bounce and cement their place within the top half of the league. Lonnie Yang made his first team debut in goal in the absence of Andy Gaut with Havering also missing Captain Liam Appleyard, Adam Lumbers and Michael Hinton but welcomed back Alex Lee, Luke Joslin and a first appearance of the season from Sam Green.
A fast start to the match saw Havering keeping early possession which resulted in Lee picking the ball up on the baseline and playing back to Harry Andrews at the top of the D who then fed Paul Dover who shot for the bottom corner for the Waltham Forest keeper to make a strong save down to his right. Continued pressure resulted in a succession of penalty corners with Andrew’s efforts saved by the visiting keeper and moments later Lee deflected wide at the far post.
With time running out in the half Forest thought they had taken the lead after Havering gave the ball away coming out of defence the centre forward lifted the ball into the D past Dover and struck into the bottom corner, but the initial lifted ball was adjudged to be dangerous. As the half time whistle blew Havering were awarded a penalty corner and after Andrew’s attempt was blocked near the penalty spot Paul Johnson and Alastair Lewis both had efforts blocked before another corner was awarded, this time the visiting keeper was once again up to the task deflecting the ball wide.
The second half started in a similar vain to the first with the forest keeper making a diving save to his right from an Andrew’s drag flick. It was however the visiting team who took the lead from their only shot on goal in the game, a well worked moved down the right resulted in a first-time pass into the centre forward who flicked the ball into the roof of the net past the diving Yang.
Havering were denied an equaliser when Luke Joslin’s hit into the D was deflected high across the D by Paul Dover into the path of Lee who volleyed the ball above his head into the top corner of the net, the umpires disallowed the goal as the initial hit into the D was deemed to be dangerous. Another penalty corner for Havering brought another save from the visiting keeper this time saving from Alex Lee from close range.
With time running out Havering finally made a penalty corner count as Andrew’s strike across goal was deflected in by Adam Willett. It got even better as Johnson beat the Forest attacker down the right and played in Andrew’s who drove towards the D and played in Hayden Joslin on the baseline. Joslin showed great composure to play the ball across goal to Lee on the penalty slot who calmly pushed the ball into the bottom corner of the goal.
A well-deserved victory for Havering who reclaim third place in the table before travelling to Hertford after the half term break.
