Emma bags two goals in Ladies 1's first home game

Havering Ladies hosted Old Southendian Ladies at Campion for their first home game of the season. Havering began a bit scrappily but the defence of Ellie Gane, Bev Horne, Wendy Schofield and Sue Harwood held firm and Tamara Bailey in goal had just a few early saves to make. Havering began to assert themselves on the game with Catherine Semon and Vicky Lynch working well in the centre of the midfield. Havering came close to taking the lead when Steph Prowse running into the circle latched onto Lauren Earle's cross but put the ball just wide of the post. Havering continued to apply pressure and were rewarded for their efforts when Vicky took a quick free hit, spotted Emma Isherwood and put the ball through leaving Emma with just the keeper to beat. Emma took full advantage and put the ball through the keeper's legs to give Havering the lead. Old Southendians fought back but again Havering soaked up the pressure.
The second half saw Havering step up but unable to capitalise on their pressure. Monica Dubb and Gemma McKenzie-Cardy supported the midfield well and Gemma came close to adding a second from Alex Semon's cross. Despite the pressure it was Old Southendians who scored next through a penalty corner. Havering responded well and created several scoring opportunities but both Catherine and Emma shot wide. Another run from Lauren gave the ball to Catherine who crossed in, Alex put pressure on the defence and after a moment of confusion the ball popped free for Emma to tap over the line for the winner. It was a hard fought victory and Havering will hope to improve upon their overall performance next week.
