Hard fought victory keeps Ladies 1's at top of the table

Havering hosted Wapping 3s who were just one point behind them in the League. Knowing they were in for a tough game given the scorelines their opponents had been achieving, Havering set out in determined fashion and soon took the lead with a text book penalty corner. Emma Isherwood injected for Chris Noller to stop and Catherine Semon thumped the ball in with a first time strike. A second was added soon after as Alex Semon took the ball down the right wing and her bouncing cross was deflected into the goal by Isherwood. The Wapping keeper made several crucial saves from Catherine, Alex and Vicky Lynch to keep Wapping in the game but Havering soon struck again after some excellent quick passing; Isherwood tracked back to win the ball in the defensive half, made a quick pass to Emily Gilkes-Tarsey who similarly moved the ball on to Alex who drove into the circle and cracked the ball past the keeper. Wapping began to pull themselves back into the game but Havering keeper Sophie McCoy made good saves to deny them. The constant pressure from Wapping told though and they pulled a goal back just on halftime. Havering began the second half a little slower than they had the first but added a fourth goal after a series of penalty corners. A slip to the left gave Alex the space to fire a hard strike into the corner. Wapping were determined to stay in the game and kept up the pressure but the Havering defence of Steph Prowse, Wendy Schofield, Monica Dubb and Sue Harwood dealt well with it. Sue began making good runs down the right wing linking up well with Lauren Earle and threatening the Wapping defence. Despite this it was Wapping who scored next capitalising from a quick break. Havering began to play to their strengths again with Harwood and Earle pressing down the right and Schofield, Lynch and Gilkes-Tarsey down the left. The fifth and final goal came from Earle driving down the wing and crossing for the ball to glance off Noller into the path of Gilkes-Tarsey and Isherwood who both swept at it, Isherwood's stick making the last contact before the ball went in. It was a hard fought victory which keeps Havering at the top of the table.
