Havering 3s 2 Witham 4s 3
Men's 3s tamed the "Beast from the East" and were able to play the only game of Hockey in the East of England on Saturday.
Havering started the game in a positive fashion and created several short corner opportunities. Havering took the lead, when Richard Cast weaved his way through on the top of D, managing to keep his balance, avoiding several hefty challenges, to slot the ball home, with aplomb. Havering continued to press forward, with good interplay between the midfield of James Hosier, Mike Gilbert, Bill Birbeck and Richard Cast, complimented by fine running down the right flank from Kulveer Mangat. No further clear cut chances, resulted in Havering going into the break with a deserved 1-0 lead.
Witham moved up a gear in the second half and were soon on level terms, when a powerful strike from a short corner, was deflected high into the net, by the post man Mike Hosier. The visitors then took the lead shortly afterwards, then calamity struck, when a soft third goal rolled in, when Havering's GK mistakenly left it, believing the ball had been propelled from outside the D.
Havering, struggled to find the target, maybe due to their snow blindness, from the mounds behind the goal, but eventually pulled a goal back. Good work from Bill Birbeck in the D, found Luke Clarke, who slotted the ball home at the near post.
The game flowed from end to end, but Havering ran out of time to get the equalizer and Witham held on for their 3-2 victory.
