Men's 1's win away at Wisbech

Early Appleyard goal enough for all three points

Havering travelled to Wisbech on the back of a disappointing loss to Bourne, determined to not make it 3 losses in a row. However, the team were short of numbers, missing Adam Lumbers, Aaron Cornish and skipper Harry Jenkins due to other commitments.

On a slow pitch, Havering started off very well. A good run by Harry Andrews on the right hand side led a pass into Liam Appleyard in the D who turned and finished accurately into the far corner.

Havering continued to dominate possession through the midfield work of Alex Defroand and Paul Dover and created a few more chances during the early parts of the game. Alex Lee staged a decent run into the D from the right hand side again and after a pass to Andrews on the penalty spot, the ball found its way to Stuart Garnell at the far post who failed to convert from a tight angle. A few short corner chances went begging as well and Havering could not find a second goal. Shortly after, Dover injured his hamstring which led to an already depleted Havering team to only have 11 fully fit players for the majority of the game.

Wisbech for their part were content to play half-court, even after conceding early. Their game plan consisted of attempting to catch Havering on the counter at speed. Their tactics almost succeeded when the Wisbech forward burst through the defensive line of Havering and delivered a teasing ball across the face of Lee Bennett’s goal which Wisbech could not get on the end of.

In the second half, chances were few and far between for both sides. Havering won a few more corners but again failed to convert and Wisbech continued to attempt to catch Havering on the counter, but were stopped by the resolute defending of Jack Barlow and Paul Johnson.

Eventually, Wisbech started to come out of their defensive shell in pursuit of an equaliser. However, some good hold up play by Appleyard and Lee and excellent possession retention by man of the match Verinder Channa negated Wisbech’s attacks effectively and Havering held on for the 1-0 victory.

Havering host Dereham in a mid-table clash this weekend and will be aiming to keep in touch with the table toppers with another victory.
