Havering Hosted COP2 at Campion and were looking to build on their first win of the season last time out against Waltham Forrest. It was always going to be a tough test facing last season’s league winners who sat second in the Premier B table but Havering had a full squad to call upon.
In the early stages of the match Havering struggled to keep any real possession of the ball and COP took advantage winning an early Penalty Corner. A flick towards goal was deflected into his own net by Harry Jenkins giving Lee Bennett very little chance – at this point it looked like it would be a long day for the home side.
The goal appeared to kick Havering into life and it wasn’t long before they were back in the game, a flowing move down the left found Harry Andrews on the baseline who squared across goal for the waiting Liam Appleyard who deflected the ball into the net. The second goal followed shortly after, Jenkins made a run out of defence and was played in down the right and crossed expertly into the D where Lewis Smith was on hand with a first time finish past the visiting keeper.
The game had completely opened up by this point with both sides exchanging attacks with Jack Barlow making some crucial interceptions at the back. As half time was approaching Havering were rewarded for their collective pressure in the COP half and from a Penalty corner extended their lead with Adam Lumbers firing in from the top of the D.
The start of the second half was all COP as they changed tactics and put a high press on the Havering backline, struggling to get the ball out of their half Havering conceded when a COP forward fired home from the right of the D. COP continued to push high but began to leave space in behind their press and Havering capitalised when Paul Dover broke through the middle and rounded a COP defender and keeper with his goal bound shot deflected in by the last defender.
Havering were unlucky not to add to their lead shortly after as Stuart Garnell stormed through the middle of the pitch beating several visiting players, as he approached the D Garnell shot and the ball deflected off a defender and into the goal. However the goal was ruled out as the umpires judged the initial shot was outside the D. COP nearly capitalised from a Penalty Corner finishing from close range but thankfully this decision went Havering’s way as the goal was correctly ruled out for hitting a foot in the build-up.
For the reminder of the match it was all Havering who got their fifth goal from a Penalty Corner with Aaron Cornish scoring his first goal for the club after exchanging passes with Alex Lee. Paul Johnson added a sixth after hitting home from the top of the D after being played in from the right by Alastair Lewis. Havering finished the scoring with another good team move as Johnson set free Smith down the right hand side who showed good composure to cross for Cornish to add his second with a simple tap in.
COP had a final chance from another Penalty corner but Smith did well to deflect a goal bound effort wide of the post. Havering host West Herts 2’s at Campion next weekend and will need to maintain this level of performance if they are to pick up their third straight win.
