Young Cambridge University prove to be too strong for depleted Havering

Havering Men - 1 Cambridge University Men - 7

This was a game the Havering players will want to forget as quickly as possible. Cambridge University and Havering both came into this game knowing that 3 points would be extremely important in moving away from the relegation battle. Unfortunately, Havering were unable to field a squad that was anywhere close to their first line up as Lewis Smith, Harry Jenkins, Adam Lumbers, Ollie Cipa, Stuart Garnell and Gaz Ingram were all missing. To deplete the squad even further player-coach Paul Johnson also had to leave the field after approximately 20 minutes due to a head injury. That left Havering with just 12 available players for the rest of the match – beating a young Canbridge University team with such low resources was always going to be an arduous task.

The first half was evenly matched with both teams battling out in midfield and scrapping for opportunities. Paul Dover and Glen Noller failed to convert an advantageous 2 on 1 change against their last defender which could have put Havering 1-0 ahead early on. This could have been a turning point in the game an shifted momentum Havering’s way. At the other end Cambridge University managed to convert 2 quick goals following flowing counter attacking moves.

Havering started strongly in the second half and Glen Noller managed to pull a goal back through a well worked short corner to make the score 2-1. Havering players appeared confident that they could turn the score around at this stage but unfortunately they fell in the same trap again shortly after as they conceded yet another counter attacking goal concluded by an easy finish on the back post. This buried Havering’s hopes of a comeback and Cambridge University were able to take full control from this stage onwards as they found it easier to take advantage of an exposed Havering team that continued to try to pour forward in search of goals of their own.

Havering travel to Cambridge City next on Saturday in the hope that fortune can quickly turn back in their favour.
