Havering take the win

Havering hosted Potters Bar at Campion looking to bounce back from last weekend’s narrow defeat away at Harpenden. Alex Lee and Adam Willett returned to the squad, but Havering were without Alastair Lewis, Luke Joslin and Paul Dover.
In an uneventful first half it was Havering who had the best opportunity to open the scoring when Alex Lee released Toshan Patel from the halfway line who drove at goal and slipped the ball back to Lee past the visiting GK only for the defender to make a vital block, as the ball fell back to Lee he was unable to find the target from a narrow angle.
Harry Andrews went close from a penalty corner with the GK making a strong save to his right, but it was Potters Bar who opened the scoring from a penalty corner of their own with the ball being played back to the injector who slapped the ball in at the near post. On the stroke of half time Havering were awarded another penalty corner, Andrews initial effort was blocked but the ball fell back to Liam Appleyard who played back across goal finding the back of the net, but the ball was adjudged to have hit Patel’s foot on the way through.
Early in the second half Havering were level as Adam Lumbers through ball was fortunate to make its way to Andrews at the top of the circle who played in Appleyard on the right for the Captain to beat the last defender and fire a shot into the near post. Both sides then had a handful of half chances to take the lead, but the scores remained level going into the final ten minutes of the match.
Havering had Andy Gaut to thank for a triple save from close range after a defensive error allowed the Potters Bar forward through on goal. With only minutes left on the clock a free hit for a lifted ball in their own half allowed Havering to break quickly with Olliver Hinton playing through Appleyard who moved the ball right to Lee who drove towards the circle before playing in Appleyard who had continued his run to score with a diving reverse deflection.
A much needed and deserved three points for Havering who will travel to Colchester next week looking to pick up their first points on the road.
