Havering too Smart for Cambridge University 2

The best of this game came in the first half with both teams adopting a pressing game in the pursuit of winning balls high up the field to launch fast and penetrating attacks. Havering were the most organised and well drilled side out of the two though. They stifled Cambridge University’s fluid attacks and movement by means of continuous communication and disciplined defending led by Alastair Lewis and Paul Johnson. At the other end they were clinical in winning short corners and taking their chances.

It was no surprise that the first goal came through a short corner move. Ollie Cipa’s first strike was well saved by the goalkeeper, however, Cipa himself picked up the rebound and set up Harry Andrews on the far post who scored his seventh goal in six games. A few minutes later Caruana Smith picked Alex Simpson on the twenty-five who dribbled skilfully into the dee before hitting the ball precisely in the bottom left corner of the Cambridge University goal.

More chances were created at both ends but the score did not change and the half ended with Havering leading by a two goal margin. Cambridge University had the most promising of these chances but Joseph Shearer-Rust in goal parried the one vs one threat before man of the match Harry Jenkins cleaned up the mess.

The second half was a calmer affair with most action being played in midfield and considerably less goal mouth activity to report. Havering did manage to score one more though, through an Ollie Cipa drag flick. From then on, Havering coasted to to the end of the game never having to step up through the gears and happy to hold onto the second consecutive clean sheet. It was disappointing that unlike the previous week against Saffron Walden, they did not manage to control possession as well. Nonetheless, it was a very mature and and confident display from start to finish.
